Authors Inspire Students at Carisbrooke College

The Isle of Wight Literary Festival’s Schools Programme brought a touch of literary magic to Carisbrooke College last Thursday, as two acclaimed authors visited to inspire Key Stage 3 students through stories, insight, and creativity.
Years 8 and 9 were first to take part, enjoying a session with Anthony McGowan, author of The Truth of Things series. The fourth book in the series, Lark, won the prestigious Carnegie Medal in 2020. Anthony spoke about his childhood in 1970s Leeds, his school days, football, and what led him to write for teenagers. He also read from Pike, the third book in the series, sharing a gripping scene inspired by an urban myth from his youth.
Students were spellbound by his storytelling, sparking lively discussions afterwards. Anthony also offered a glimpse into his writing process, emphasising the role of conflict and resolution in great storytelling. The session ended with a flurry of thoughtful questions from students — and Anthony praised their engagement and curiosity.
In the afternoon, Year 7 students welcomed Annelise Gray, author of the Circus Maximus series for middle-grade readers. She shared how her love of horses and childhood reading of National Velvet — along with the iconic chariot race in Ben-Hur — inspired her to write about the world of ancient Rome.
Drawing on her extensive studies of Roman history, Annelise gave students a vivid picture of life as a charioteer and the immense spectacle of the Circus Maximus. Students were captivated by her descriptions, and the session wrapped up with an enthusiastic question-and-answer session.
Both authors left impressed by the students’ enthusiasm, curiosity, and engagement — and Carisbrooke College was proud to be part of a programme that continues to celebrate the power of reading and imagination.
