Sports Review - Autumn Term 1

At Carisbrooke College, part of the HISP Academy Trust, sport isn’t just something that happens on the pitch, it’s a powerful tool for wellbeing, ambition, leadership, and opportunity for all.
Through our extensive Physical Education curriculum and extra-curricular programme, students have shown Courage, Ambition, and Teamwork in every sense, truly living our CASTLE values both in competition and in community.
Curriculum PE:
This term, students have embraced a wide range of sports including football, netball, basketball, badminton, and table tennis. The enthusiasm and participation across all year groups has been outstanding, reflecting both skill development and the joy of active learning.
Next half term will see a refreshed rotation to ensure all students experience a variety of sports including health and fitness and cross-country competitions, giving every learner the chance to contribute to their tutor groups score in the inter-house competition.
“I love that we get to try so many different sports, there’s something for everyone, and it makes PE really exciting.”
- Jack (Year 10)
Looking ahead to the spring term after Christmas, students will tackle rugby and hockey, developing teamwork, leadership, and Courage. Please take this as an early reminder for students to bring gum shields and shin pads with them to lessons after Christmas. Later in the year, emerging sports such as handball and pickleball will also feature as part of Carisbrooke’s commitment to innovation and Sustainability in PE.
BTEC Sport and Leadership:
Our BTEC Sport students continue to excel, combining practical skill with leadership and reflection.
Year 10 students have been designing and leading their own warm-ups in preparation for assessment.
Year 11s are capturing and analysing performance footage, demonstrating Total Excellence in their final assessments.
Meanwhile, our thriving Sports Leadership Academy is providing incredible opportunities for students to apply their learning in real contexts. This term, our leaders supported the Island Primary Tag Rugby Festival hosted here at Carisbrooke, officiating, mentoring, and even earning their Tag Rugby Coaching qualification with more students doing the same next half-term.
Extra-Curricular:
Carisbrooke’s extra-curricular programme continues to go from strength to strength, reflecting our Lead with Pupil First and Equity values.
In just one half term, we’ve recorded over 1,000 student attendances and 220 individual participants across lunchtime and after-school clubs, a remarkable achievement that showcases the passion and inclusivity of our school.
Our Year 7s kicked off their Carisbrooke journey with an unforgettable watersports trip to the local Aqua Park, setting the tone for a year of adventure and teamwork.
Lunchtime clubs have included badminton, table tennis, basketball, netball, indoor cricket, and even a Tech Deck Club, while after-school activities have focused on football, basketball, and netball all supported by our dedicated PE team.
