A day with the Pearl of Africa Children's Choir

Last Friday we were fortunate enough to have a visit from The Pearl of Africa Children’s Choir. Students across the school enjoyed musical performances and workshops throughout the day, including singing, dancing and drumming.

We were even treated to a surprise pop-up performance in the canteen at lunchtime. The Pearl of Africa choir is part of a UK-based charity supporting schools in southern Uganda. The children in the choir come from the Molly & Paul Childcare Foundation schools in Uganda, where they receive education, care, and a safe space to grow. Their mission goes beyond performance: they fundraise to support education, health, food, water, and more for their communities. By sharing their stories through music, the choir helps raise awareness about the real-life challenges these children face (poverty, limited access to basic services). This kind of cultural exchange helps break down stereotypes and encourages conversations about mental health, resilience, and support.

The Pearl of Africa charity’s vision is to “break the cycle of poverty … by investing in education, health, water and sustainable food programmes.” By supporting these children’s education and well-being, the charity fosters a foundation of stability — a key protective factor for mental health.

What can we do to support this amazing charity as a school community?

  • Donate using this link to support the choir’s mission.
  • Spread the word: Share what you learnt about their charity vision. Understanding their goals helps us all appreciate how much their music is about more than just performance – it’s about creating lasting change.

Thank you to the students for engaging with the day so enthusiastically. The total amount raised through our mufti day for the charity was £304 and the choir took £259 at their craft stall over lunchtime. This means our total amount raised was £563! Well done, everyone!
