Grandson Visits Carisbrooke College to Honour Grandfather named on War Memorial

A family’s search for their grandfather’s wartime history led to a visit to Carisbrooke College this week.

The grandson of Heber Percy McBride, a former pupil of Newport Secondary School, travelled to the Island after discovering that his grandfather’s name appears on a memorial plaque commemorating past pupils who died in the World Wars.

Although Newport Secondary School no longer exists, its memorial plaques were preserved and later housed at Carisbrooke High School. The plaques honour former students who lost their lives in service during both the First and Second World Wars.

Heber Percy McBride died on 1 June 1940 when HMS Havant was sunk after coming under heavy German attack during the Dunkirk evacuation. His name is recorded among those remembered for his sacrifice.

During the visit, the family were able to see the memorial and take photographs, a poignant moment that helped connect them with their grandfather’s legacy.

It was a privilege to welcome Mr and Mrs McBride to Carisbrooke College. The visit served as a reminder of the enduring importance of local memorials in preserving personal stories of courage and loss, and we are very proud to house this is our school.

Mr McBride said: ‘My grandfather enlisted in the Royal Navy in 1916 and served for 22 years.  He had a good military record and was twice recommended for a medal and a gratuity.

I have been visiting the Isle of Wight for many years and when sailing in competitions in the Solent, have always used the Portsmouth War Memorial as a landmark to help in plotting a course.  It is only in more recent years that I have learnt that my Grandfather’s name is on the memorial.

I am very proud of my grandfather’s service and sacrifice and am touched that his name appears on the roll of honour plaque at your school.
