Carisbrooke College: Spring Term Sports Review

Since we have returned from the Christmas break, students at Carisbrooke College have continued to take part in a range of activities during core curriculum time and through extracurricular activities kindly offered by our dedicated PE department.

Curriculum PE:

Students have been taking part in activities such as handball, table tennis, hockey, rugby, dance and one of our brand-new initiatives, Pickleball, which seems to have gone down very well amongst our student body.  As well as this, we have continued to see an ever-increasing uptake amongst our table tennis community and as we move into the knockout stages of our table tennis competition we are looking forward to seeing if there are any FA Cup style upsets. We have also joined the darts' community with our year 11s trialling another new sport at the College in the hope this is another activity we can add to our curriculum moving forward.

Next term will see pickleball and hockey continue for a few more weeks until we move outside for the rest of the summer in order to support summer exams and our students will be taking part in activities such as cricket, softball, rounders, athletics and a few other summer-based sports.

A special thank you to those students and parents/guardians who supported the school by ensuring their child had all the required protective equipment so they could take part in their curriculum activities safely.  This is very much appreciated.

BTEC Sport and Leadership:

We would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Fleming and Mr Phillips for running such an outstanding BTEC Sport moderation throughout this term.  As a result, our students' grades were finalised and these have now been agreed by external moderators and the standard in our marking and assessments was deemed outstanding.  As a result, this continues to give our students the confidence that the work they are completing is being assessed to the highest standards and, as a result, they are able to know exactly where they are at in terms of their final outcomes.  Our year 10 students have also been completing practical assessments and their final hand in date for all coursework is due after Easter.

We would also like to thank Mrs Peake for taking a number of our year 10 students through a disability leadership course whereby they were able to then lead students from other schools in the area of Table Cricket.  This gave the students to work with students that they do not necessarily see day-to-day and pushed them to really work on key leadership skills.  Well done to all who took part.

Thank you to Miss Dewey for also organising our young leaders, who can now be found supporting us with clubs and activities at lunchtimes on a regular basis.

Extra-Curricular:

Throughout the spring term, Carisbrooke students have continued to participate in a range of sporting activities both at lunch and after school. The turn of the new year witnessed our year 7 boys almost take top spot in the year 7 boys indoor football competition and the start of the basketball season.  Our year 7s also played in another tournament at The Bay with our A team coming away unbeaten as eventual winners of the competition and our B team also securing a couple of wins on the night.  Our year 11s also travelled to Cowes for the annual tournament, which was the last chance for this age group to play football for their schools, and they did not disappoint.  Coming second in the end due to a very unlucky goal right on the final whistle, they made us all proud, and they will all be missed.

Whilst there are still a number of basketball tournaments to be completed, our year 7 basketball team have proven to be quite the powerhouse on the Island, winning all 5 league games including some record victories which was then followed up by going unbeaten in the annual tournament and taking the Championship.  Some achievement for a first year team. Our year 8s have also taken part in their annual tournament where they came third overall thanks to some amazing team performances.

We have had a number of athletes represent the school at Hampshire cross-country in both U14 and U12 (well done William and Jenson).  Well done to our year 7 and 8 athletes who also took part in the annual Isle of Wight Cross Country Championships at CTK earlier this term. Keeping with the theme, our year 8s took part in the annual Indoor Athletics championship, coming in with a 4th place overall but could have come much higher should a few decisions had gone our way.

Our U13 and U15 girls football teams finished their seasons and also competed in the annual tournaments at Cowes. Whilst they would have loved to have finished the season like they had started, they have done us extremely proud, and we look forward to seeing what they can achieve next season.

In the Island badminton competitions, it was pleasing to see so many new players interested this year.  Our year 7 boys competing against year 9s were a credit to the school and our girls team did just as well, almost getting through to the Hampshire round.  Our U16 boys showed their true potential by eventually becoming the unbeaten champions in the finals evening at CTK, and we can't wait to see how they do at Hampshire next term.

At the start of February, our Indoor Rowing team competed at the annual championships at The Bay and what a performance they put in.  Coming away 4th overall against some powerhouses is no small achievement and with a couple of first place finishes and a few more who just missed out by a few metres or seconds, the team looks very positive for future years.

Our cricket teams have started their seasons with our u13s winning their triangle tournament back in February and are now waiting to take on the other finalists towards the end of April.  Another fine achievement considering 5 out of the 6 players are technically u12s.

Going into the new term, our year 11s will continue to compete in the first addition of our darts competitions, and we will also crown our first ever table tennis champion next term.  There will be other intra-house competitions for students to compete in and sports fixtures linked to cricket, softball, rounders and athletics as we move through the summer term.

House Competitions:

Since our last report, students have continued to challenge each other in a range of home competitions including, badminton, rowing, rugby, handball, pickleball, rugby and hockey. They have also been gaining points for each appearance they complete through our extracurricular provision.

Looking Ahead

Next term we will be moving to mostly summer sports, and we will also be putting on many more house competitions, including our annual sports day.  Therefore, there is still everything to play for and plenty of opportunities to move your tutor group and year group up the house competitions leader board.  Thank you as always to our students and parents who support the PE department in ensuring that every child gets the opportunity to better themselves on a daily basis.
