On Monday 20 July, 75 students took part in our ‘Walk the West’ Coastal Challenge, completing a spectacular circular route around the west of the Isle of Wight. Despite the long distance covered and the hot weather, the students were absolutely amazing throughout the day.

Starting and finishing at Freshwater Bay, the route took in the stunning scenery of Tennyson Down, The Needles, Headon Warren, Totland, Colwell Bay, Yarmouth and the Western Yar. The viewpoints from Tennyson Down and Headon Warren were truly spectacular and provided unforgettable moments for everyone involved.

Student engagement, behaviour and attitude was exceptional from start to finish. The day was physically demanding, but students showed remarkable resilience, digging deep when the walking became tough. It was particularly pleasing to see them encouraging and supporting one another throughout the challenge, demonstrating excellent teamwork and determination.

We enjoyed a picnic lunch at Totland Bay, where some students even took the opportunity for a refreshing paddle in the sea. Ice creams at Colwell Bay provided a welcome boost before the final stages of the walk, and another well-earned treat at the finish line in Freshwater Bay was the perfect way to celebrate the achievement. A lovely bonus at the end of the day was watching a game of cricket at Freshwater, rounding off a fantastic day in the sunshine.

A huge thank-you goes to the staff who gave up their time and energy to make the day such a success: Mr Lyle, Mrs Peckham, Mr Westby, Miss Bridgewater, Miss Dove and Miss Larcombe. Their support, encouragement and organisation ensured that the 75 students had a safe, enjoyable and memorable experience.

The Walk the West Coastal Challenge was a wonderful example of our students embracing a challenge with positivity, resilience and enthusiasm. They should all be incredibly proud of what they achieved.
