Physical Education & Sport

Subject Intent: Physical Education & Sport uses physical health, teamwork, fair playub, and leadership to build trust, physical confidence, and personal resilience. At Key Stage 3, students develop a lifelong commitment to physical activity, health, and wellbeing, acquiring the knowledge, skills, and confidence to participate successfully in a range of physical activities. At Key Stage 4, students deepen their understanding of movement, performance, fitness, and healthy lifestyles, learning to think critically and analyse performance.

Assessment Framework: Pearson Edexcel BTEC Sport is assessed through internally assessed coursework (60%) and externally assessed examination components (40%) focused on practical fitness and applied sports science.

The Five Curriculum Towers in Practice:

  • Disciplinary Literacy & Vocab: Teaches anatomical, physiological, and fitness terminology alongside leadership communication cues required for active coaching scenarios.
  • Memory & Retrieval: Routinely revisits physical skill mechanics, tactical concepts, and sporting rules across variable cycles to achieve motor skill mastery.
  • Inclusion: Delivers a broad and adaptive physical curriculum ensuring that regardless of physical baseline, all students experience success and build athletic confidence.
  • Enrichment & PD: Features an array of competitive sporting matches, leadership roles, and outdoor recreational experiences to foster teamwork, character, and resilience.
  • Careers & Readiness: Blends careers education throughout the curriculum, mapping direct entry pathways into coaching, fitness instruction, sports science, teaching, and physiotherapy.
