Religious Education (RE)
Subject Intent: Religious Education creates safe, respectful spaces for philosophical debate, exploring shared human values, belief systems, and diverse world-views. At Key Stage 3, the Living Difference IV syllabus is delivered to critically explore religious and non-religious world-views. Students learn how to read, write, and debate like real theologians and philosophers. Concepts such as shared human experiences (belonging), shared religious ideas (worship), and specific terms unique to a tradition are taught with academic precision.
Assessment Framework: Key Stage 3 assessment is integrated into terminal units; no formal GCSE is sat, as curriculum focuses on critical world-views and philosophical reflection.
The Five Curriculum Towers in Practice:
- Disciplinary Literacy & Vocab: Focuses heavily on disciplinary literacy and theological key words. Teaches students how to read, write, and debate like real theologians and philosophers.
- Memory & Retrieval: Maps vocabulary securely into long-term memory by breaking down terms into shared human experiences (belonging), shared religious concepts (worship), and specific terms (Tawhid, Incarnation).
- Inclusion: Welcomes and explores diverse world-views, providing scaffolded entry points into abstract philosophical debates so all perspectives can participate safely.
- Enrichment & PD: Fosters ethical evaluation and deep reflective capabilities, encouraging students to analyze complex moral systems with academic precision.
- Careers & Readiness: Prepares students for citizenship in a modern diverse world by cultivating deep emotional intelligence, ethical negotiation, and critical reasoning.
Withdrawal from Religious Education (RE)
Parents and carers have the right to request that their child is withdrawn from all or part of RE lessons.
If you wish to request a withdrawal, please email info@carisbrooke.iow.sch.uk or contact your child’s Head of Year if you would like to discuss this further.
Students who are withdrawn from all or part of RE will remain on the school site and will be supervised by a member of staff.
