Computer Science and Digital IT

Subject Intent: Our Computer Science & Digital IT curriculum emphasises digital safety, collaborative coding, and ethical technological engagement in an interconnected world. At Key Stage 3, students build a secure foundation in the core principles of Computer Science. They learn how computer systems work, including hardware, software, networks and data representation, while developing programming skills through practical application using Scratch and Python. At Key Stage 4, there are two options: OCR GCSE Computer Science (focusing on algorithms, systems, and cybersecurity) or Pearson BTEC Digital Information Technology (focusing on user interfaces and data handling).

Assessment Framework: OCR GCSE Computer Science is through written examinations and programming-focused assessment. Students are assessed on their knowledge and understanding of computer systems, algorithms, programming, and cybersecurity, alongside their ability to apply computational thinking, analyse problems, and develop logical solutions. Assessment in Pearson BTEC Digital Information Technology combines internally assessed coursework with externally assessed components. Students are assessed on their understanding of digital systems and processes, their ability to design and evaluate user interfaces, manage and interpret data, and apply digital skills in practical and real-world contexts.

The Five Curriculum Towers in Practice:

  • Disciplinary Literacy & Vocab: Explicitly teaches theoretical, technical logic, and digital terminology so students can accurately evaluate, test, and explain computational logic.
  • Memory & Retrieval: Employs a sequenced approach where hardware, networks, and data representation are revisited and extended over time to establish meaningful connections.
  • Inclusion: Uses inclusive and ambitious structural design, utilising project-based investigations and structured scaffolding to enable all learners to tackle complex mathematical logic and coding challenges.
  • Enrichment & PD: Fosters collaborative problem-solving, real-world investigations, and curiosity surrounding emerging technologies and their broader impact on modern society.
  • Careers & Readiness: Prepares students directly for digital, tech-sector, and computing careers by evaluating the ethical, legal, cultural, and environmental dimensions of modern technology.
