Enterprise (KS4 Only)

Subject Intent: At Carisbrooke College, our Enterprise curriculum empowers students with commercial awareness, collaborative problem-solving, and entrepreneurial mindsets to contribute meaningfully to the local and national economy. Enterprise is founded on the idea of inspiring entrepreneurs to be innovative, capable, and resilient champions of their chosen industry, developing skills that enable them to turn ideas into reality with proper planning and consideration of resources.

Assessment Framework: At Key Stage 4, students follow the NCFE Level 1/Level 2 Technical Award in Enterprise. The qualification combines an internally assessed, externally set non-exam assessment (coursework 60%) with an externally assessed written examination (40%).

The Five Curriculum Towers in Practice:

  • Disciplinary Literacy & Vocab: Students learn to read, speak, and write with fluency, purpose, and pleasure about enterprise. This is supported by direct command verb scaffolding, vocabulary glossaries, case study active reading, and professional 'Pitch' writing.
  • Memory & Retrieval: Memory-boosting techniques and activities are designed specifically for business and enterprise students. These include the 'Memory Palace', dual coding and infographics, retrieval practice, and real-world associations. It develops the ability to make good judgements by forming personal opinions and using facts from a variety of sources.
  • Inclusion: Inclusion topics like diversity, accessibility, and equal opportunities are developed through hands-on projects, such as designing inclusive products or auditing school accessibility. These practical activities directly prepare students for business ethics, HR regulations, and stakeholders' needs in their exams and coursework.
  • Enrichment & PD: Turns ideas into reality through proper planning, pitching, and evaluation. Enterprise enrichment applies classroom topics like finance, marketing, and operations to hands-on projects like the Tenner Challenge or business pitching. These real-world simulations directly prepare students for their exams and synoptic projects by building practical business planning skills.
  • Careers & Readiness: Acquires transferable skills for the business world that allow endless possibilities. Learners could progress onto an apprenticeship in the business sector through a variety of occupations that are available within the sector, such as marketing, business administration, and human resources.
