Life Skills
Subject Intent: The Life Skills curriculum fosters adult independence, self-worth, and personal agency, empowering students to contribute meaningfully to our school and wider Island community. Through highly adaptive, reactive interventions, students consolidate their unique values and aspirations, building the self-sufficiency needed to navigate the world with purpose. This personalised pathway focuses on developing essential character and employability competencies, with no formal qualification emerging from the subject.
Assessment Framework: There is no formal external examination; student progress is captured through the longitudinal observation of personal achievements and the acquisition of AQA Unit Awards.
The Five Curriculum Towers in Practice:
- Disciplinary Literacy & Vocab: Refines communication and reflection through staff modelling and collaborative group work, encouraging the use of professional, real-world terminology linked to personal growth and future life goals.
- Memory & Retrieval: Key social and autonomy skills are systematically revisited to reinforce long-term learning, allowing students to build resilience and self-understanding through iterative practice and reflection.
- Inclusion: Utilises highly bespoke learning routes and scaffolded practical activities to ensure all students, regardless of their starting point, can celebrate their progress and remove barriers to success.
- Enrichment & PD: Creates authentic opportunities for students to future proof their lives through practical, real-world experiences that nurture self-sufficiency and deeper personal growth.
- Careers & Readiness: Guides students to identify and cement their individual strengths and resilience, equipping them with the practical life skills required to step confidently into adulthood.
