Weekly Updates from Carisbrooke College

Firstly, we have recently reviewed and updated our Charges and Remissions Policy, here is the link to the full document for your reference. This policy has been approved by our Academy Committee Governors.

This week, I met with Island Futures to review our careers provision and begin planning for the year ahead. It was a really productive discussion, giving us the opportunity to reflect on what is working well and to identify areas where we can continue to strengthen the support we offer our students as they consider their future pathways.  During the meeting, they highlighted a website designed specifically for parents and carers and I wanted to share it with you: Talking Futures

Our main examination period is now underway. I would like to commend our students for the calm and focused manner in which they have approached the start of their exams. Year 11 parents were recently sent a spreadsheet outlining the additional revision sessions available, along with arrangements for breakfast provision for students who have 9.00 am exams. These sessions are a valuable opportunity for students to consolidate their learning and receive last-minute guidance from staff.

We are very aware that this can be a stressful time, so I would like to remind all students that if they have any concerns or worries about their exams, we are here to support them. Please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff.

Earlier this week, we conducted a lockdown drill practice, and I am very pleased to report that it was carried out to a high standard. Students responded promptly and staff also ensured that procedures were implemented efficiently, creating a safe and orderly environment throughout the exercise. The next practice will not be communicated in advance, but we will text you after to let you know that one has occurred and to set minds at rest.

Looking ahead, next week we will be holding our Year 8 Parents’ Evening. If you have not yet booked your appointments, these can be made easily using the Arbor App. We strongly encourage all families to take this opportunity to meet with teachers and discuss progress.

Have a lovely bank holiday weekend, and we look forward to seeing students on Tuesday 5 May in full uniform and ready to learn.

Thank you, as always, for your continued support.

Feel Good Friday!

Music for Mental Health: turn up the volume on your wellbeing! This week we enjoyed music assemblies with some thoughts about the power and potential of music and the opportunities it offers, alongside various live performances from students across the year groups.

Music isn’t just entertainment – it’s a powerful tool to support your mental health. Whether you’re feeling stressed, low, or just need a boost, the right song can make a real difference.

Mrs Peckham's Ultra Challenge - this weekend!

We are incredibly proud of Mrs Peckham, our school’s Mental Health Lead, who is taking on the Isle of Wight Ultra once again this weekend - an amazing 106km challenge! She is raising funds for the charity Parkinson's UK.

Mrs Peckham will complete the first half as part of a small support team for her friend Anita, who has recently been diagnosed with early onset Parkinson’s and has set herself this inspiring personal goal. After that, she will continue on solo for the remaining distance - pushing herself even further to raise additional funds and taking on a personal test of resilience. Mrs Peckham is hugely passionate about the positive impact walking can have on mental health, and the strength and resilience built through challenges like this. We can’t wait to hear all about her experience in upcoming wellbeing assemblies!

If you would like to support Mrs Peckham's fundraising, here is the link to her Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/page/beth-peckham-5?utm_medium=FR&utm_source=CL

We all wish you the best of luck, Mrs Peckham!

Forest School

Some of our students have been taking part in practical forest school sessions recently, supported by Forest School Leader Geoff Mason. They have been building confidence and practical outdoor skills through hands-on activities. From bug hunting and whittling wood, to making Nordic rope and safely lighting a Kelly kettle, they’ve embraced every challenge with curiosity and teamwork. It’s been brilliant to see problem-solving, creativity, and resilience growing in such a natural setting!

Transferring to Secondary School – New Year 7’s from September

The deadline for transport applications to be submitted for students transferring to Secondary School is 1st May 2026. To make an application please visit our website https://www.iow.gov.uk/article/2418/Apply-for-home-to-school-transport.

Transport for eligible children, whose applications were received on time in line with the dates above, will be allocated to transport by the end of August, and Parents/Carers will be notified about those arrangements via email. For a small number of cases who may require complex transport arrangements, these may not be able to start in September and parents/carers will be notified if this is the case.

Applications received after the deadline will be treated as ‘late applications’ and can only be reviewed after all on-time applications have been processed. For the families of eligible children who apply late, this means that transport may not be in place for the start of the school term in September and may not be available for the first school term. During this time transport arrangements including costs will be parents responsibility.

Students already receiving transport (excluding Post 16 students)

Students from Year 7 -11 who already receive school transport do not need to do anything unless their circumstances have changed, or if transport has been specifically agreed for a set period of time. For example, if you have moved home or school, you will need to reapply for transport by the relevant deadline. If your child is in year 11, their eligibility for free transport will cease at the end of the current academic year and you will need to explore alternative transport arrangements for your child’s post-16 education or training, even if your child will continue to attend the same setting.

On the first day of term, students who are travelling on a contracted bus service will be able to travel without a valid ticket providing they are in school uniform. Bus passes will be sent to the school to be distributed to students on their first day.

Post 16 Students with an EHCP

Post 16 learners are required to apply for transport each academic year and each academic year the local authority is required to consult on the arrangements for the next school year. The policy for the 2026/2027 academic year is now available online and any application received will be processed in line with this policy.

The application deadline is 1st May and applications can be completed online at https://www.iow.gov.uk/article/2419/Travel-assistance-for-post-16-students
