Weekly Updates from the Head of School

The sun is shining and it is hard to believe we are already in May! That means we are now well into the official Year 11 exam season. This week, students sat their Art exams, and the work produced was fantastic. Mrs Westby was incredibly impressed with both the creativity on display and the positive attitude shown by students throughout. We'd also like to commend the rest of the school community for being so supportive — your quiet and respectful behaviour around exam areas has not gone unnoticed. Well done, everyone!

Next week, the focus shifts to Drama, Sport BTEC, and Business exams. Best of luck to all students involved — we know you’ll do your best.

On Tuesday, we held our much-anticipated Staff vs Students netball match to raise funds for the Year 11 prom. The staff team managed to win all four games, but the real victory was in the fun and teamwork shared by all participants. A huge thank you to everyone who played and those who came to support. In total, so far we have raised £65 and there’s still money coming in! — an amazing contribution toward a memorable prom!

It’s another busy week ahead, not just with exams but also with several important activities:  Tuesday 6 May we have our first Bikeability session for Year 7 and a group of selected Year 9 and 10 students who are part of our Sports Leaders programme will be completing their training.  Friday 9 May there will be a vaccination ‘mop-up session’ for Year 8, 9 and 10 students who may have missed previous appointments.

We would like to remind all students, parents, and carers of the importance of respecting our local community. Unfortunately, we have received recent complaints about damage to fences, bushes, and property, as well as reports of poor behaviour from some students on their way to and from school. While wearing the Carisbrooke uniform, students represent our school — and our expectations for respectful, responsible behaviour extend beyond the school gates. Let’s all do our part to maintain a positive reputation in the community.

Wishing you all a relaxing and enjoyable weekend!

Football News

Last weekend, the annual Paul Westby memorial tournament was hosted by Gurnard FC. 115 teams took part with over 3000 players and supporters attending games throughout the day.

In the under 12s tournament, Ryde Raiders won the final against a strong Gurnard Eagles team.

Carisbrooke College's Jimmy in Year 7 picked up the trophy as Captain and he is pictured left with his proud manager and dad. A great achievement. Well done Jimmy, Mr Silvey and Ryde FC!

Cricket News

This past weekend saw a thrilling encounter between the Isle of Wight U12s and visiting side New Beacon School from Kent, a match that had everything: drama, determination, and a nail-biting finish that ended in a one-run victory for the Isle of Wight with just 9 balls to spare.

One of the standout performers of the day was Carisbrooke College student Logan, who shone both with the gloves and the bat. Behind the Stumps Logan kept wicket with confidence and energy, pulling off what could only be described as an epic catch, a moment of athleticism and sharp reflexes that turned the momentum in Isle of Wight’s favour and lifted the whole team.  Logan also opened the batting with calm composure, contributing a valuable 16 runs, including two cracking boundaries. His innings laid the platform for a successful chase and helped steady the team through a tense start.

The match went down to the wire, with Isle of Wight needing every run to cross the finish line. Thanks to strong performances across the board and Logan’s all-round performance, the team edged to a thrilling 118–117 win, sealing the game with just 9 balls remaining.

Congratulations to Logan and the entire U12s squad on a memorable victory!

Feel Good Friday

This week's theme for Feel Good Friday is Walking for Wellbeing.

Check out our infographic for details of the benefits of walking for our mental health and some easy ways to incorporate more walking into your everyday life: Feel Good Friday 2 May: Walking for Wellbeing

Further to our theme for this week's Feel Good Friday, we are also excited to share that two of our members of staff will be taking part in the ambitious Isle of Wight Ultra Challenge this weekend, a 106km non-stop round-the-Island challenge! Mrs Peckham will be hiking it and Miss Dewey will be running! So do give them a wave and a cheer if you see them on their treks! Mrs Peckham is using the opportunity to fundraise for the Isle of Wight Youth Trust, a charity we work closely with here at Carisbrooke College; more details can be found on her JustGiving page. If you feel able to support her fundraising at all, it would be very much appreciated.
