Weekly Updates from Carisbrooke

We’re now fully into the swing of Year 11 exams. For those sitting a morning exam, breakfast is available from 8:00 am. Staff are also on hand to offer support and answer any last-minute questions. We strongly encourage students to attend these sessions—it’s not only a great chance to enjoy a free and nutritious breakfast, but also a valuable opportunity to relax and connect with friends before heading into the exam room.

As an additional support, all maths teachers will be staying for an extra hour after their maths lesson Period 5 on Wednesday 14 May to help students prepare for their upcoming maths exam on Thursday. Attendance is expected, and refreshments will be provided. If there are any issues with transport after this session, please contact Mrs McDowall for assistance.

Our Year 7 students have been taking part in Bikeability sessions, learning essential road safety skills while cycling in the local community. The second session is scheduled for next week. A big thank you to Mrs Lythgoe for organising this valuable extracurricular opportunity.

Today (Friday), we held a catch-up vaccination session for students who previously missed their scheduled doses. If your child missed this session as well and still needs their booster or HPV vaccination, please contact your GP surgery, who should be able to make the necessary arrangements.

We’d also like to remind parents and carers that while we value open communication, staff may not always be available for unscheduled meetings. If you wish to speak with a member of staff, please contact reception in advance so we can arrange a suitable appointment.

Finally, regarding attendance: if your child is absent, please notify the school via the Arbor app each day of the absence. As part of our commitment to safeguarding, if we do not receive daily communication, a text will be sent home to follow up on the student’s whereabouts.

Thank you for your ongoing support, and best wishes to all of our Year 11s during this exam period!

Natalie Sheppard, Executive Headteacher and Karen Begley, Head of School

SENDCo Introduction

I'm delighted to introduce myself as the new Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo) here at Carisbrooke College. My name is Zoe Divers, and I will be taking over the role from Debbie Connor over the course of the next few weeks. I have a strong background in SEND education, working my way up from LSA level to teaching, so this is a great opportunity for progression for both myself and Carisbrooke College. I have a passion for supporting young people to achieve their very best and finding strategies to help them to thrive throughout their education. I'm committed to working closely with students, families, and staff alike and I’m really looking forward to working with you all.

Prom fundraising has continued this week with the first of the football matches, kicked off by the Year 11s. Three teams played against each other, and all players paid £1 to enter. This raised over £30, with more money still coming in. Next week will see the other year group's football fundraising, with KS3 turning their matches into an 'Inter Tutor Competition'.

Carisbrooke College, as a community, observed a two-minute silence at midday yesterday to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

VE Day 80 is a celebration of 80 years of peace since the end of World War Two in Europe. It is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since.

Mrs Randall has led assemblies this week to inform students of the history of VE Day. However, we would also like to share a link to The British Army's Twitch channel where they have provided a 40 minute #VEDay80 history lesson: https://www.twitch.tv/videos/2453342996?tt_content=vod&tt_medium=mobile_web_share This link will be live for 1 week and may be of interest to both parents and students.

Walk the Wight - Sunday 11 May

Good luck to everyone taking part in Walk the Wight this Sunday!

We would like to include a montage of photos of our community taking part in this event in our weekly news updates and on our social media channels.

If your child is taking part (over any of the distance options) and is happy to be included, please send a photo of them somewhere along the route to gemma.long@iow.hispmat.org by the end of Monday 12 May.
