Exams are now well underway, and I would like to take this opportunity to praise our students for the calm, mature and positive manner in which they have approached this important time. Revision sessions have been well attended, students have shown excellent focus around the school site, and invigilators have commented on the respectful conduct shown during examinations. We know that this period can be challenging and demanding, so it has been wonderful to see students supporting one another and representing the school so positively.
A reminder to all families that mobile phones and smartwatches must be handed in before every examination begins, in line with national exam regulations. If a student arrives late to school, these items should be handed in at reception before going to the examination room. We appreciate your support in reinforcing this message at home.
Away from the examination hall, a group of our Year 7 students took part in Bikeability training this week. The instructors commented very positively on the behaviour, enthusiasm and attitude of our students throughout the programme. Bikeability provides an invaluable opportunity for students to develop confidence, independence and important road safety skills that will benefit them well beyond school. It was fantastic to see students embracing the experience so positively.
This Sunday, a group of students will travel to the British Basketball Final at the O2 Arena in London. Experiences such as these are incredibly valuable, giving students the opportunity to enjoy elite sport, experience a major national venue and spend time together outside the classroom. A huge thank-you goes to Mr Peake for organising the trip and giving students this exciting opportunity. We very much look forward to hearing all about the day and the highlights when the group returns.
Finally, today was a particularly emotional day for our school community as we said our final goodbye to our much-loved caretaker, Pete Ball, whose funeral took place this afternoon. Pete was far more than a colleague to many of us — he was a familiar, friendly and caring presence at the heart of school life for many years. Generations of students knew Pete for his kindness, humour and willingness to help others, and he played an enormous role in making Carisbrooke feel like a community. He will be deeply missed by staff, students, families and all who knew him.
Pete loved music, it played a huge part in his life, so in his honour, we will be holding a music-themed mufti day on Wednesday 20 May. Students are invited to wear non-uniform clothing with a music theme, and we ask for a £1 donation, with all proceeds going to the music department, a department Pete was proud of.
On Wednesday evening, we will also be hosting our annual Battle of the Bands' event in support of the same cause. This evening will showcase the incredible musical talent within our school community, and this event will be especially meaningful. We hope as many families and friends as possible will come along to support our students, celebrate Pete’s love of music and enjoy what promises to be a memorable evening together. We will also say a fond farewell to Mr Freeman, who is retiring from life as a cover supervisor, after an incredible 10 years of service.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support of the school and our wider community.
