Dear Parents and Carers,
Welcome to this week’s blog update as we reach the end of a vibrant first half-term. It has been a wonderful week across Carisbrooke College, filled with outstanding student leadership, high ambition, and a whole-school celebration of wellbeing.
A Great Moment This Week: Year 11 Lead the Way at 'Your Future' Careers Event
On Tuesday afternoon, our Year 11 cohort attended the 'Your Future' Careers Event at Medina College to explore post-16 pathways, sixth-form options, apprenticeships, and college courses.
Following the event, I was delighted to receive an email from Mr Chris Williams, Head of Year 12 at The Island VI Form, who praised the maturity and leadership of our students:
“I am just emailing you to say how impressed I was with your Year 11 cohort yesterday at the 'Your Future' event. Not only did I have a number of meaningful conversations with them about their next steps, but I put them on the spot when a group of Year 8 students from the Free School—who are just about to choose their GCSE subjects—asked your Year 11s what advice they would give them about making their choices. Their advice was mature, ranging from 'don't choose subjects just because your friends are doing it' to 'thinking what they should do after GCSEs.' The younger students really appreciated the advice.”
— Mr Chris Williams, Head of Year 12, The Island VI Form
Hearing external educational leaders celebrate our Year 11s for their articulacy, guidance, and community spirit reflects the exceptional young adults they are becoming. They represented Carisbrooke College with immense pride.
A Thought from the Head: Our Curriculum Vision & The National Education Agenda
This week, I have been reflecting deeply on the national direction set out in the Education Secretary’s speech and how explicitly our curriculum vision aligns with these national priority frameworks.
At Carisbrooke College, our educational philosophy is rooted in a clear belief:
At Carisbrooke College, we believe that learning thrives where strong, meaningful relationships are built. Inspired by our iconic connection to Carisbrooke Castle, we view education as a shared stronghold — a supportive community that protects, nurtures, and carries every student into their future.
Education is not a journey taken alone; it relies on trust between teachers, students, families, and our wider Island community. As a close-knit Island secondary school, our unique geographic setting shapes who we are, the challenges we face, and the vast potential we nurture. We embrace our local context by turning coastal challenges into opportunities for growth, relationship-building, and ambition.
Strategic Alignment: How Our Vision Expressly Aligns with the Education Secretary's Priorities
1. Breaking Down Barriers to Opportunity
The Secretary of State’s national reform drive centres on ensuring that every child — regardless of background or postcode — accesses a rich, high-ambition education. By tackling 'The Island Challenge' directly, we turn geographic and coastal isolation into a springboard for opportunity through strong regional partnerships, high academic expectations, and rich cultural enrichment.
2. A Relational Foundation for High Standards
The national vision emphasises that high standards in learning and behaviour cannot be enforced through punitive isolation alone, but thrive where strong, trusting relationships are built. Our 'Choice, Chance, Consequence' framework and trauma-informed practice treat education as a 'shared stronghold' where students feel safe, valued, and empowered to excel.
3. Education for Life & Character
Aligning with the national curriculum and assessment review, our curriculum is designed not just to pass examinations, but to equip young people with critical thinking, resilience, emotional literacy, and life skills so they can navigate a changing world with confidence.

World Mental Health Day, Tutor Time & Mufti Day Success
This morning, students across all year groups engaged in dedicated tutor time sessions marking World Mental Health Day. Tutors led discussions exploring the anchor activities that nourish our emotional wellbeing — from sports, music, and creative hobbies to spending time outdoors and pursuing passion projects. Students were also reminded of key support networks, including our in-school pastoral teams and free, anonymous digital support via Kooth (now called Soluna).
Connecting directly to this theme of enrichment and wellbeing, today was our student-led Mufti Day!
I am thrilled to announce that thanks to the incredible generosity of our families and staff, we have raised £339.43 so far!
Reaching Our Goal for Team TechTonic
We have officially passed the £300 target requested by Year 10 student TS and the robotics team. This deposit secures their entry and component kit for the national First Tech Challenge.
Supporting Island Youth Mental Health
All remaining funds raised above £300 (£39.43 and counting) will be donated directly to the Isle of Wight Youth Trust to support vital youth mental health services across our Island community.
Looking Ahead: Preparing for November Trials & A Restful Half-Term
Last night, we were delighted to welcome so many families to our Year 11 Parents’ Evening, following Thursday afternoon's focused English Literature Masterclass.
During the evening, teachers distributed complete revision resource packs (in both paper and digital formats). We encourage all Year 11 students to use these materials to construct a structured, manageable revision schedule over the break as they prepare for their crucial November Trial Exams.
Half-Term Break
School closes today, Friday 16 October, for our two-week October half-term break. School will reopen for all students at 8:40 am on Tuesday 3 November 2026, following our staff development day on Monday 2 November.
I hope all our students, staff, and families enjoy a peaceful, restful, and enjoyable two-week break, taking plenty of time for the hobbies, activities, and moments that bring you joy.
Thank you, as always, for your continued trust, partnership, and commitment as we build our educational castle together.
Warmest regards,
Natalie Sheppard
