Food Preparation & Nutrition

Subject Intent: Our Food Preparation & Nutrition curriculum explores how food brings communities together, builds practical self-reliance, and promotes lifelong health and wellness. At Key Stage 3, through the study of nutrition, food science, food safety, food provenance, and practical food preparation skills, students learn how food choices impact individuals, communities, and the wider world.

Assessment Framework: AQA GCSE Food Preparation and Nutrition is assessed through two NEA tasks (Food Investigation and Food Preparation) and a written examination.

The Five Curriculum Towers in Practice:

  • Disciplinary Literacy & Vocab: Explicitly introduces and targets specialist terminology required to confidently explain food science principles, evaluate recipe outcomes, and justify dietary choices.
  • Memory & Retrieval: Carefully sequences baseline safety and core cooking techniques at the start, progressively revisiting these concepts to move into complex recipe execution and nutritional analysis.
  • Inclusion: An inclusive practical environment supporting all students to cook safely and build self-reliance in the kitchen via adapted tasks and close practical modeling.
  • Enrichment & PD: Explores diverse global culinary traditions, food provenance, environmental impacts, and ethical considerations surrounding modern international food production.
  • Careers & Readiness: Equips students with life-long safety skills and a scientific understanding of food health, linking directly to hospitality, nutrition, and wellness pathways.
