PSHE & RSHE
Subject Intent: PSHE is the engine of emotional intelligence at Carisbrooke College, teaching healthy relationships, self-awareness, personal safety, and social responsibility. We have a whole-school approach to PSHE / Health & Well-being, which includes statutory RSHE (England DfE 2019). Every year group studies the same learning theme at the same time (Being Me in My World, Celebrating Difference, Dreams and Goals, Healthy Me, Relationships, and Changing Me), spiralling the learning up through the age groups, supplemented by tutor activities addressing emerging local needs.
Assessment Framework: There is an integral assessment process at the end of each theme and constant reviewing of the 'Big Questions' connected to each theme along with attainment descriptors.
The Five Curriculum Towers in Practice:
- Disciplinary Literacy & Vocab: Students learn the language, vocabulary and techniques that enable them to build their confidence and ‘emotional repertoire’ to ensure that their learning permeates every pore of school life. Oracy is a key focus in discussions.
- Memory & Retrieval: The curriculum is structured to revisit and reinforce key social and interpersonal skills over time, enabling students to build confidence, resilience, independence, and self-understanding through repeated practice and reflection.
- Inclusion: Sessions use a variety of teaching methods; scaffolded resources, practical activities, and flexible approaches that ensure all students can access learning, reflect, recognise their achievements, and celebrate progress.
- Enrichment & PD: PSHE provides the keys to enrichment as it allows learners to engage with meaningful real life scenarios, which identify where in the world beyond the classroom they can demonstrate their learning.
- Careers & Readiness: Our curriculum prepares students to develop into the most social, emotional, moral, spiritual and resilient young person they can be to embrace adulthood and enter the world of work.
